A note on gender identity and inclusion
StageHealth acknowledges that some individuals who undergo menopause do not identify as women. We are committed to inclusion and respect for the patients we treat and the wider community.
Menopausal symptoms can manifest differently for everybody, and the spectrum of LGBTQ+ (including gender-diverse) identities adds additional nuance to an already individualised experience. For people who aren’t cisgender (when your gender identity matches your sex assigned at birth) or straight, existing advice and discussions about menopause can feel irrelevant or dismissive of their journeys altogether.
Language is an important part of creating inclusion. In our content across all platforms, StageHealth does make reference to “woman” (and the pronouns “she” and “her”) to refer to individuals in the context of discussion of menopause. We also refer to “people with ovarian systems” as a shift away from binary language. When describing or referencing study populations used in research, StageHealth will use the gender terminology reported by the study investigators.
This is a constant work in progress and something we welcome respectful discussion on. Please reach out for any questions or comments.
